Announced as Artist-in-Residence at Ballincollig Winter Music Festival 2026
The Ballincollig Winter Music Festival is delighted to announce that internationally acclaimed contemporary artist David Shillinglaw has been appointed Artist-in-Residence at The White Horse for the 2026 festival.
Shillinglaw’s distinctive artwork already forms the official visual identity of Ballincollig Winter Music Festival 2026. Featuring recurring motifs of hares, horses, birds and movement, the work captures the energy, rhythm and strong sense of place at the heart of both the festival and The White Horse.
As Artist-in-Residence, Shillinglaw will create a large-scale mural at The White Horse, developed as a week-long live project during the festival. Designed to live with the space year-round, the mural will weave together the hare, the horse, music and movement — transforming the terrace into a vibrant cultural backdrop for performances, conversation and gathering, during the festival and long beyond it.
The residency continues a creative collaboration between Shillinglaw and Joe Carey, owner of Bakestone Café and The White Horse. Their relationship began with Shillinglaw’s award-recognised mural at Bakestone Perry Street, created as part of Sounds from a Safe Harbour.
Speaking on the announcement, Joe Carey said:
“This residency continues a creative collaboration that began thanks to an introduction by Mary Hickson of Sounds from a Safe Harbour, who first proposed David’s approach to the Bakestone Perry Street façade. That moment of creative matchmaking resulted in an award-winning mural and the beginning of a friendship between David and myself — one that now bears new fruit for the 2026 Ballincollig Winter Music Festival. It’s incredibly exciting to see this collaboration evolve and take on new life at The White Horse.”
